Pastor's Pen
Our Scripture for Graduation Sunday comes to us from John 13:31-14:7. In this passage Jesus says, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into His glory, and God will be glorified because of Him…Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer…you will search for Me, but you can’t come where I am going. So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples.”
In this set of verses–John 13:31-35–Jesus tells His disciples He is going to enter into His glory and He will only be with them for a little while longer. Jesus is hinting to His disciples that He is going to be handed over to be crucified.
One of the general commandments that Jesus leaves His disciples is “occupy until I return” (Luke 19:13, KJV). Though this phrase shows up in a parable, Jesus is teaching an important lesson. While He is gone, we work until He returns. Pairing this with John 13’s command, we can see the general command is to “Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other…[this] will prove to the world that you are My disciples.”
Once we get to John 14 Jesus tells them, “I am going to prepare a place for you…When everything is ready, I will come and get you” (John 14:2-3). In verse 4, Jesus says, “You know the way to where I am going.” Thomas responds in verse 5, “No, we don’t know, Lord. We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus responds, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.”
Jesus leads the way because He is the way. Have comfort and faith in Him always.
